European Exploration:  14th Century to 17th Century

The Columbian Exchange

The Columbian Exchange was an exchange between Europe and the Americas when the Spainish arrived in the Americas. It changed both Europe and the Americas extensively because it gave new types of foods to each place and disease was brought to the Americas.

Results of the Columbian Exchange

Positive Results

Some positive results of the Columbian Exchange were that both areas acquired different kinds of food. Without potatoes, which became an important food in places such as Ireland, the population in Europe most likely wouldn't have grown to the extent that it did.  Horses became a great animal for Native Americans to use because they helped quite a bit with hunting.

Negative Results

One negative result of the Columbian Exchange was the spread of disease and germs into the Americas. The Native Americans reacted horribly to the diseases, especially smalllpox, becuase they had never experienced those diseases and were not immune to them. Unfortunately, because of the diseases, many Native Americans died. Over 90% died between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Below is a YouTube video about the Columbian Exchange. This is not my video. I had no involvment in it.
